Like2Bike Whidbey Events 2009

Saturday, April 25, 1:00-2:00pm Free Bike Clinic at the Oak Harbor City Marina
Followed by a Group Ride.
For those who'd like to participate in the May Like2Bike Campaign but need some coaching, this is your big chance! After the Holland Happening Parade, bring your bike to the marina for tips on bike care, how to fix a flat, safety tips and rules of the road. Afterward follow the leader for a waterfront ride. This is a great opportunity for kids to get the basics from some real pros.

Sunday, May 3, Noon-5pm, Sustainability Fair, Skagit Valley College, Oak Harbor
Launching the Like2Bike Campaign.
Bring the whole family to this free fair for marimba music, children's activities, a mini-farmer's market, talks and displays on Green Building, Gardening, Waste Reduction, Farms and Food, and Alternative Transportation. Practice putting your bike on the bus rack. Get bike maps for Island County and Oak Harbor. And at 4pm ride along with city councilman, Rick Almberg and School District Superintendent, Rick Shulte.

  1. The Like2Bike Whidbey coordinators are a group of friends and community educators that like to bike... (duh). We started by calling it a "Bike to Work" Campaign, then expanded it to "Bike to Work and School". But then Jim, who is retired said, "I don't bike to work OR school. I just like to bike." Besides that, it's catchier.

So for the month of May we want to encourage people to take to the streets on a two wheeler. We're looking for civic groups who can make a contribution toward kids bike helmets, or businesses who can offer incentives like a free coffee if you "drive up" on a bike, or discounts on bike gear, or other imaginative rewards.

Though we won't be tracking miles or days people ride, we encourage folks to get a group from your workplace or classroom to challenge another group from their workplace or classroom. You track it and publicize it here! We'll cheer you on!

  3. I think the school buses should have the same bike racks as the public buses do. That way, kids can get their bike driven to school early in the morning when it is cold and dark and the traffic on the road is hazardous. Then they can ride their bikes home or to other activities in the afternoon, when it is warm, bright and there is less traffic on the roads. Safety first, then health and happiness!
